Announcement of the Winners Names of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation 2017

Organized by the Secretariat general and the Honoring Ceremony is on the 15th of next May at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi
Nahayan Mabarak: “Support of Khalifa Bin Zayed has promoted the Award’s position regionally and internationally”

H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and President of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation, expressed his appreciation of the superior patronage the Award has received by the wise leadership of H.H Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (God protects him), the support of H.H Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Higher Commander of the Armed Forces and the appreciation of H.H Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and minister of Presidential Affairs. The Award has been thereby prompted to go ahead towards assuming the leading position at the Arab and international levels and to contribute to promotion of the UAE role in serving the blessed tree and agricultural innovation as well as the workers in this field around the world.
At a press conference held by Prof. Abdelouahhab Zaid, Secretary General of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation, yesterday, Monday, April 17th 2017, morning at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi, during which names of the winners of the Award’s 9th Session were announced, in the presence of Prof. Hilal Hamid Alkaabi, Chairman of the Administrative & Financial Committee. He emphasized that we are proud at the high level the Award has reached in its 9th Session, thanks to the great confidence and guidance of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and President of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation.
The Winners
The Secretary General of the Award added that winners of the 9th Session have been selected according to the applicable standards and mechanisms of granting of the Award and based on the report of the Scientific Jury, assessment of the participating works and approval of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and President of the Board of Trustees of the Award, of the winners of the Award’s five categories, including: Distinguished Innovative Studies and Modern Technology category, Pioneering Development and Productive Projects category, Distinguished Producers in Date Palm Sector category, Pioneering and Sophisticated Innovations Serving the Agricultural Sector category and Influential Figure in the Field of Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation category.

Fifth Category: Influential Figure in the Field of Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation

Winners of the 1st and 2nd categories get a prize of AED 1 Million(equivalent to USD 300,000) plus a trophy and appreciation certificate each, whereas winners of the 3rd, 4th and 5th categories get a prize of AED 750,000 (equivalent to USD 200,000) plus a trophy and appreciation certificate each. The prizes would be presented during the honoring ceremony held Monday, May 15th 2017, at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

Quality Leap and Great Strides
The Secretary General added that the Award has made great strides since its inception with the blessing of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (God protects him) and has been honored by bearing the name of His Highness, a fact that throws on our shoulders the great responsibility of setting out towards broader horizons to achieve pioneering as the first specialized award worldwide.
The Secretary General also stressed that the great success and quality leap the Award has achieved were thanks to the great support and attention of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (God protects him), as well as the patronage of H.H, Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Higher Commander of the Armed Forces, the continuous support of H.H Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and follow-up of H.E. Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and President of the Award’s Board of Trustees who has been keen to develop the Award each session towards achieving leadership and proceeding forward to new horizons.

Most Important Researchers and Experts
The Secretary General then added that the Award has attracted the most important researchers, experts, farmers and those interested in date palm sector at the Arab and world levels for participating in the Award and competing for its categories. The Award has achieved a distinctive shift for development of date palm and related studies and was extended a year ago to include agricultural innovation, as well, and to consolidate its position worldwide. He also praised the active role of media people in presentation and promotion of the Award and appreciated all types of media as partners in excellence and success.
The Secretary General of the Award congratulated winners of all the Award’s categories and stressed that the winners of all categories are added value contributing to development of date palm sector and agricultural innovation at the world’s level. He expressed his hope that the Award would receive more participations in the next session towards serving and promoting this sector at all levels.
Continuous Development of the Award
For his part, Prof. Hilal Hamid Alkaabi, Chairman of the Administrative and Financial Committee of the Award said that a tracker of the Award’s march since it was first founded would notice that it has achieved continuous development and great success within a nine-year career full of accomplishments and gains, consisting a qualitative addition to the date palm sector. It has also made wide strides and realized a quality shift in the field of research and studies, working thereby on development of production and marketing, improvement of production and innovation of new means as far as marketing, care and processing are concerned.
He also stressed that the great attention and special care of H.H Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (God protects him) together with good governance have had great impact on development of the Award to reach universality and occupy such a prestigious position.
He added that the present session was characterized by some key points, most notably that the number of applicants has reached 201, representing 37 countries. Participation of the Emiratis was concentrated in the studies and researches, developmental projects, distinguished producers and pioneering innovations categories.
Participations according to categories were as follows:

He noted that the qualitative participation of the number of applicants to the various categories of the Award consisted a positive indicator. The distinguished researches and studies category have, as usual, recorded the highest participation rate. He pointed out that the office of the Secretariat General has started sorting out and assessment of the participating works within a process characterized, and since establishment of the Award, by high transparency and impartiality.

Prof. Alkaabi then reviewed the most prominent accomplishments of the Secretariat General within the past year as follows:
1. Increase of the national participation in dissemination and encouragement of the targeted groups of date palm growers at the UAE level to participate in the Award’s categories, such as the Cultural Convoy, Liwa Rutab Dates Festival and the Emirates International Festival of Date Palm.
2. Movement of the Headquarter to the capital, Abu Dhabi, August 2016.
3. Organzation of the Second Egyptian Date Festival/2016 and preparations for the third season next November/2017 are underway.
4. Rehabilitation and handing over of Siwa Dates Factory with the support of H.H Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.
5. Siwa Oasis receives GIAHS certification from UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System”.
6. Launching of first “Date Palm in Poets’ Tongue” Competition, which is the first of its kind in the world/2016.
7. Launching of the 8th session of the “Date Palm in World’s Eye” poetry competition.
8. The Secretariat General of the Award participated in exhibitions and conferences related to date palm and agricultural innovation, including 15 local and international participations in Sudan, Egypt, Morocco, Oman and UAE.
9. Publication of Volume 8, including 2 issues of the “Blessed Tree” magazine, and three issues of the Award News Bulletin.
10. The award organized an advertising and media campaign, covering the various media, advertising means and specialized websites as well as the social media where followers of the Award’s Facebook page was 52,000. A special Facebook page was also launched for the “Date Palm in Poets Tongue” with more than 7,299 followers of poets and those interested in poetry. Another special Facebook page was also launched for the “Date palm in World’s Eye” photography competition with more than 3,575 followers of photographers around the world.
Prof. Abdelouahhab Zaid, Secretary General of the Award concluded the press conference by stressing the importance of the patronage the blessed tree and agricultural sector, in general, is having from H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (God protects him), the support of H.H, Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Higher Commander of the Armed Forces, follow-up of H.H Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and attention of H.E. Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and President of the Award’s Board of Trustees. This is all indicative of the organic relationship connecting the Emiratis with the date palm tree as part of our national identity and the social culture of the UAE. Date palm has been and will remain a symbol of glory for the Emiratis and an ultimate destination of their sight and love.
